Mmm, UltraEdit *Homer drool*

UltraEdit is by far the best editor I've ever tried. I've used it for some 5 years now and I can't live without it.

Curious. What does UltraEdit offer that Dreamweaver doesn't? With the exception of lower overhead (although that was more of an issue on my 192Mb RAM P2-300 - my 1Gb RAM AMD 2500+ is far to busy dealing with Firefox's RAM consumption to be bothered by DW)?

I used to use UltraEdit pretty much solely, with a brief dalliance with EditPlus and the very, very occassional toy with TextPad, but ever since Dreamweaver MX was released I've never considered using anything else.

Also prefer the OO WinMerge over UltraCompare.

To be honest, the speed issue was always the biggie for me. It had become such a rhythym for me I never thought to go back to DW for the bulk of my development. The column selection is also a huge plus but if that were the only thing, it'd be easy enough to just hop into UEdit any time I need it.

I'm going to try using DW full-time again and I'd be interested to see how well it works. Thanks for the nudge. :)

Jonathan: I found DW8 to be an improvement over the previous two versions, but it's still not something you'd open up for quick changes to a file (which is where UltraEdit would come in, I guess). It's a pretty solid program, though, even if it is a bit pricey.

My favorite for a quick edit (particularly editing .ini files) would be TextPad.

I use DW for ongoing projects because of the check-in/check out/sync functionality. I never know which computer I'm going to be on (Win or Mac desktops at work, Win notebook or Mac desktop at home), so this ensures I'm always editing the most recent version of a template or file. (And I love the tag auto-complete that brings up all possible attributes for a given tag and closes tags automatically...) I mostly use it in code view, though, not design view, but I do like design view's "live data" feature that lets me view the results of whatever dynamic code I've written without actually uploading the page (great for testing the display of query driven tables, for example.)

And I've also found DW8 to be a HUGE improvement over MX04, in terms of stability and speed.

Actually I recently started trying out Blumentals WeBuilder 2006, It's got some really nice internal live IE and Firefox previews that you can split vertically or horizontally with the code window, which when it comes to laying out your css is pretty nice, it loads up pretty quick for me maybe not as fast as something like notepad++ or textpad. And for the price I don't think it's a bad choice.
