Still here?

I think there's actually an official delurking day but this isn't it. I'm just curious. I've been running this blog now for a few years and it has been interesting to see people come and go when it comes to commenting — both here and on other blogs.

So, if you've never left a comment, or haven't in a while, stop by and say hello.

Well, this seems lika a good time as any to de-lurk myself. Good writing, and good design keeps me going here.

Kanashii said on October 19, 2006

But lurking is such fun : ) I'll buy you a beer when I come to Canada to make up for it. Now back to the shadows!

Hi Jonathan, might as well de-lurk myself after being a faithfull reader for over 2 years. Love your blow and your stle of writing! Keep up the good work!

Kevin said on October 20, 2006

I've been reading your blog since... Well, I can't remember actually. Anyway, I've never had the need to add anything to your posts, mostly the tips you keep handing out. So for all those times you've taught me something new: thanks!

Mislav said on October 20, 2006

First you mention shutting the site down, then this... Are you having some insecurities? :)

BTW... Hello! :D

Don't think I need to de-lurk but figured I'd say hello anyway! I generally comment when you post something especially useful, although I still read virtually every post of yours.

In addition, you're the reason im trying to learn cakephp, but it's going albeit very slowly. I'm waiting on a tutorial about how to build a user system (logons/accounts) along with validation, etc. with cakephp! :-P

As always, nice work and love the new layout!

Yep, I'm a lurker, though haven't been for long, having discovered your site only quite recently. Liking it a lot.

Lurker de-lurking! Fabulous design, very handy tips, good writing -- that pretty much sums up my reasons for visiting. Oh, and that killer comment box of course. :-)

Hello Hello!

Love your site.

Sam said on October 20, 2006

Time to de-lurk. I should comment more often but I try to avoid it on principal, unless I have something genuinely useful to add. Seeing all of the useless and sometimes downright rude comments on other blogs (not yours I must admit) puts me off I suppose.

Anyway, love the site, love the articles and love the redesign so far. Keep it going mate!

G.Lindqvist said on October 20, 2006

Ok, hmmm... I have to hand in a secret report everyday about your blog (the mission have going on since your started). Great recommendation and tips about Javascript, CSS etc. Oh, top secret material.

To be serious, I love the new white redesign. Like going from the darkside to the lightside! ;)

So keep up with the good work!

Meow.

This is actually the first time I've ever left a comment on a blog. I'm sure the reason is obvious - I have nothing of value to contribute.

Nevertheless, thank you Jon for the time and effort you put in to your amusing and often insightful articles. As I'm sure you're discovering in this post, there are many people out there who appreciate it - but don't often express their appreciation. Please keep up the wonderful effort, and know that we are very grateful.

Nick

(P.S. I just noticed that the comment preview updates itself as you type - very cool.)

Hi
I have been reading your blog for a while now and I realy enjoy it.
I am a student at the moment and started studying javascript, php and mysql for a project but I enjoy web design.

I find your blog a real insight and inspiration on where I want my skills to be.

I shall lurk no more!

Mislav/MichalT: Working from home all the time can be a little isolating. And I think I'm starting to get paranoid. I'm a short trip away from conspiracy theories and plans to take over the world.

Hayo: The coffee is good. :) You'll have to stop by sometime!

Like your blog, javascript stuff is my favorite. I like when you share your tips / style, even if it's not "advanced". Also more insights into CAKE would be interesting as I've never tried it but your blog makes me interested...

take care, keep it up!

David Mead said on October 20, 2006

Hi - I've been reading your writing for a while now but I normally only read this (and many others) via Bloglines so I don't leave many comments anywhere.

Love the content so keep it up. Maybe I'll leave comments more after this :-)

Can't say I've read your blog that long, but it's been a few months. I really appreciate the insights and thoughts on modern JavaScript approaches you freely give to us!

I have commented before though, I think. Usually like to take part in the discussion if I'm intrigued. Don't know if you've noticed my brainless thoughts though :-)

So, here's a thank you from Norway!

Jamie Strachan said on October 20, 2006

Been lurking here for a while... I'm just getting into JavaScripting so I haven't really had anything to contribute.

Interestingly enough, when you were at Fuel, I was working just down the street at a different webdev company: MARSWorks. Around the same time you started working at home, I did the same, although I'm still with the same company (but working from Toronto). Being at home can definitely be isolating. Maybe I should get one of these blog things...

Karinne said on October 20, 2006

Hey Jonathan. I think I've commented on your site a few times. Anyways ... I love coming here. Nice to see someone from the region (Ottawa ;) ) being out there in the web dev world and speaking about it. I've learned alot with blogs like this one and so I thank you.

One thing I'd like to know as my little web design hobby seems to be getting a bit more out there lately is, do you use any project management systems like Basecamp. Or things like Blinksale for invoice. Stuff like that? Or did you create your own?

I did that ... I created my own but, it took me so long just to get the invoices stuff working that I didn't have time to add things like a To-Do list and Milestones and other little extensions to help me with managing various projects.

Thanks!

Kenny Saunders said on October 20, 2006

This is pushing it. I only comment once a month, now I'm over my quota :(

Jonathan Snook said on October 20, 2006

Karrine: Ottawa representin'. woot. :)

I'm currently using the new Outlook beta to handle to-do lists and milestones. I try to map out my week and put in anything that I remember. I also have post-it notes to keep track of things since they're more 'in my face'. I also have a whiteboard to keep track of active projects. The whiteboard also keeps my wife informed of how busy I am and when money is supposed to be coming in.

For invoicing, I have an Excel template that I've been using for years. I just crank out PDF copies and email them. I'll be switching to Quickbooks shortly to make things a little easier.

I'll try and get into a little more detail in a future post. :)

I recall reading recently that you were feeling a little spent on the blog. Don't stop writing, Snook &ndash there's a ton of us that are really enjoying it. It's sometimes a little above my reference level from a programming p.o.v. (my emphasis is on design) but it always tends to pull me up.

Cheers from Toronto...

Karinne: the comment box is mostly CSS-driven using position:fixed. The only JavaScript is to handle the horizontal scrollbar, as need be. There's an updatePosition function in there somewhere that calculates that for me (or something similarly named).
